Cognitive & Behaviour Therapy
Cognition and behaviour are two important aspects in the functionality of every human. Their roles are key because of the influence they have on an individual’s perceived outlook on life.
Cognition refers to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. These processes include thinking, memory, problem solving, language, imagination, perception and planning. This essentially relates to the input and storage of information and how that information is then used to guide ones behavior.
Behaviour on the other hand refers to a person’s reaction or response to a perceived action or behavior. Behaviour therapy therefore helps an individual develop life skills which in turn build or improve their ability to respond to challenging circumstances or situations in a more effective, appropriate and acceptable manner.
At LBA, we have a host of trained and certified psychologists such as developmental psychologist, clinical psychologist and graduate psychologists with quality experience working with children and adolescents with different developmental disorders.

Communication and Language Therapy
Communication and language therapy is tailored to address challenges in respect to articulation, word structure and use of language as identified with children diagnosed with underlying developmental disorders that usually impair ability to appropriately interact within the environment using speech, language and communication.
Examples of developmental delays that may create challenges in language and communication include:
- Autism
- Down syndrome
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
- Specific language impairment
- Global development delay
At Little Beginnings Academy, we provide communication and language therapy services to children and adolescents. Our team of communication and language therapists offers specialized services which include: multidisciplinary assessments, developing an individualised plan of intervention that will form a part of the child’s overall Individualised Education Plan (IEP), and provide appropriate counseling to parents. Our therapeutic model is designed such that we cater to children and adolescents (1-17 yrs) who have difficulties in any aspects of communication and language.
These include:
- Understanding (receptive language)
- Expressive Language
- Memory and concentration
- Emotional regulation
- Social skills
- Play
- Conversational skills
- Generalization of communication skills acquired.
In as much as we work with children, we also interface and work with the people in their lives to make sure they are supported in all areas where their communication skills can be improved. These may include parents, caregivers, other family members and schools.
Occupational Therapy
A central theme of occupational therapy for children with additional needs is on skill building and restoration of function through play. An occupational therapist working with children emphasises on a child’s ability to independently perform daily activities, providing support as appropriate.
At Little Beginnings Academy, our occupational therapists are trained to conduct a variety of standardised and non-standardised assessments, draft an individualised intervention plan and implement evidence-based practice that focuses on improving a child’s overall development.
Working in close conjunction with our communication and Language therapists, developmental and clinical psychologists, special educators and teachers, our team aims to promote optimal functioning by helping children integrate social, emotional, physical, cognitive and environmental aspects of life. We provide children with the necessary tools to overcome barriers to independent performance of daily living activities, school work and play.
At LBA, we employ evidence-based strategies in a play-based environment. Some of our approaches include:
- Ayers Sensory Integration
- Motor Learning Approach
- Neuro-Developmental Techniques, among others.
Some of the benefits from your child’s participation in occupational therapy activities include:
- An improvement in your child’s gross and fine motor skills (standing, sitting, walking, writing, etc.)
- An increase in their concentration and attention span
- Improved self regulatory skills
- Decrease hyperactive behaviours
- Improved adaptive response to various sensory inputs
- Improved self help skills
- Improved motor planning skills.
